Thoughtful post, as usual. One thing I’d like to comment on.

I too live Twittered this forum. It was my first time doing so, and initially I encountered difficulty Tweeting and listening at the same time.

Yet as I fell into a routine, I found that Tweeting is similar both to taking notes and to passing notes (or chatting with others who are sitting nearby). Sure, Twitter–and, by extension, a computer or PDA–augments the openings for distraction, but digital note-taking also offers benefits its pen and paper counterpart can’t match. For one, when I missed something the speaker had just said, I simply checked the #mrf09 hashtag. Indeed, in my subsequent memo to colleagues, I relied heavily on the hashtag as a reference point for the forum’s highlights.

Others will disagree–as you noted, “As the number of communications outlets available to us expands, we are becoming overwhelmed to the point that we aren’t actually using any of them effectively”–but I enjoyed this opportunity-cum-challenge.
